Parent Governor Vacancy Autumn 2023

We are now inviting nominations for the position of Parent Governor on the Local Governing Board at Windmill Hill Academy School.

Parent governors play an important role as members of the governing board, which is responsible for ensuring school accountability, compliance and achievement. Governors offer support and challenge to the school’s leadership team to ensure that high standards are strived for and maintained. Governors offer a variety of skills and experience, as well as time and commitment.

Before you decide to nominate someone, or indeed stand yourself, you may want to know a bit more about what is involved? Governors need not be experts in the field of education. You need to have an interest in the school, to be able to work as part of a team, to be willing to question and challenge things, and to be able to speak to children, staff and parents.

In terms of commitment, you will be expected to attend one full Board meeting a term, one working group/committee meeting per term and conduct a school monitoring visit up to once per term. The number of visits will depend on the number of governors on the Board, and it is usually expected that you may conduct the odd informal visit too. You will need to commit to attending any training required for your role and agree to follow our code of conduct. You do not need any formal qualifications but you must be aged 18 years or over, and you will be required to complete a full DBS check. You must be a parent of a child/children at the school and, if you undertake paid employment at the school, it must be for less than 500 hours per academic year for you to be eligible. The term of office for a governor is 4 years (although you can resign before the end of your term if you need to).

If you would like to find out more about how you can contribute to governance at our school, please email the An Daras MAT Local Governance Officer on acullum@andaras.org who can provide you with more information about being a governor, and arrange for a chat with the Chair of Governors.

If you would like to stand for Parent Governor, please complete the nomination form (copies in the school office) and return to the school office, for attention of the Head of School. Please complete the section of brief biographical details in no more than 150 words. If there is more than one nomination an election will be held by secret ballot. If that is necessary, voting papers will be sent to all parents together with details of the ballot procedure. Please have your nomination forms in by noon on Friday 8th December 2023.
